October 6 was the weekend of the California QSO Party. Fellow OCARC members and guests met at the Jeffery Open Space Park for a day of radioactive friendship. We put a station on the air operating in the California QSO Party.
Antennas were a 20M vertical and a few dipoles. The 40 foot trees at each end of the picnic area offered a chance to try out antenna launchers. Rigs were an IC‐7000 and IC‐746Pro.
The facilities include four park benches and clean restrooms. Club popup tents provided shade.
The Orange County Amateur radio Club was founded back in 1933. This September we celebrated the 85th anniversary of the club with a reunion. If you are a new, current or former member you are invited. Plans are being made and activities are being planned for the event. Members and former members are invited. Set aside this date and join us. Make your travel plans if you have a ways to come. THE EVENT STARTED OUT IN THE PARKING LOT AT 6:30 P.M. WITH A SHOW OF MOBILE INSTALLATIONS BY:

We've all participated in demonstrating ham radio to non-hams in events like Field Day or perhaps emergency communications drills. In every case, demonstration stations feature station equipment and antenna setups and operators in front of the radios. Often, the rigs and operators face away from the passers-by, and all they see are people's backs and wires and the rear panels of radios.
Over the last five-plus years, Dennis Kidder, W6DQ, Brian Yee, W6BY and Wayne Yoshida KH6WZ have been a core group of hams working on a mission to inform and educate non-hams about ham radio. They re-define the term "demo station" to attract and expose high-tech non-hams, kids and their parents about the educational value our ham radio hobby and service can bring.
Carl Gardenias (WU6D – Section Manager, ARES) and Ken Bourne (W6HK – OC RACES Chief) each gave a half-hour presentation on their organizations, discussing purpose, membership, when activated, etc. This was followed up with a panel of the presenters available for questions.
The OCARC once again participated in the annual ARRL Field Day. Details are on our Field Day webpage
Our own Chip Margelli, will teach us tricks and techniques to improve our Field Day practices and help our score, but all the time you will think you are just being entertained. Don't miss this meeting and DON'T MISS OUT ON FIELD DAY.
Marty Woll - N6VI, a former ARRL vice-director for the southwest section, presented a program for ALL levels of ham operators, information of interest to all. Marty is a very active ham involved in DXpeditions, ARES, contesting, VHF/UHF, etc. With a career as a CPA and CFO he has also been very active in presenting information regarding regulations: antenna ordinances, emcomm support, ARRL policies and activities. You can find him giving a presentation at the conventions and many of the local clubs.

This program was originally scheduled for the February meeting.
NVIS is a method for reliable communications within a few hundred miles that was used by the military many years ago. Cliff Guice – KG6MIG will give information on what it is, the history, and how you can use it.
Note: The meeting was moved from March 16th. to March 23rd.
Tim Duffy, K3LR, from DX Engineering presented our program via Skype. The topic was an introduction to the amazing Multi Multi K3LR contest station located in Pennsylvania.
This was our first presentation via Skype and it went very well.
Again this year a group of members of the OCARC supported the City of Orange Police with their radio communications prowess in the annual law-enforcement race. This is a relay footrace covering 120 miles in 20 legs. The race begins outside Baker, CA and goes along Rte 127 to Shoshone, CA; on Rte 178 to the Nevada border; through Pahrump NV and along rte 160 into Las Vegas.
This year the Orange Police Department finished 43rd overall out of 275 teams, and third in their division of 150 or less sworn officers. Their time for the 120 miles was 15 hours 35 minutes and 33 seconds. They finished with their best time ever beating last year's time by 10 minutes and 59 seconds.
OCARC members participating were: Tom Cowart W6ETC Kris Cutting W6KJC Bob Eckweiler AF6C Nicholas Haban AF6CF Ken Konechy W6HHC Jeff Mikoleit KK6YUP Don Poysa K0VNJ Robby Robinson KB6CJZ
This program was originally scheduled for the April meeting.
Looking for a ham radio activity the whole family can enjoy? Want an outdoor “techie” sport that will make kids set aside the video games and smartphones? Joe Moell, KØOV, told us about the fun of radio direction finding (RDF) and the many variations such as T-hunting, radio-orienteering, and foxoring (attendies now know what this is) and tha we may already have the needed equipment. As a bonus the same equipment and skills can be used to find RFI.
The club held its OCARC WINTER FIELD DAY at the Ocean View School District site at 17200 Pinehurst Lane in Huntington Beach.
Our Entry Class:was 4'O' ('O' standing for 'Outdoor')
Purpose: To foster Ham camaraderie, field operation, emergency operating preparedness, and just plain on the air, outdoor fun in the midst of winter for American, Canadian and northern DX Amateurs.
When: Winter Field Day ran for 24 hours during the last full weekend in January1900 UTC (11 am PST) Saturday to 1900 UTC (11 am PST) Sunday. For 2018, the dates were January 27th and 28th. Station set-up commenced on Saturday morning around 7 am.
Our guest speaker was April Moell – WA6OPS
“It’s about the Patients: Real Responses to Hospitals since 1980 and New Expectations”
Many of you know April as a registered nurse and founder of the Hospital Disaster Support Communications System (see http://www.hdscs.org). She discussed the program, the current status, and challenges and expectations. Please bring family and friends. This is not only amateur radio related and is interesting to all.
